Quarry Village is a proposed community of about a thousand homes in the Hayward hills near California State University, Hayward. It would be built on about 30 acres of abandoned quarry land now owned by Caltrans, which will be sold for development in a few years.
Quarry Village is designed to provide a convenient, friendly, healthy, safe and affordable place to live, with less dependence on cars. The Village is designed around people, walking, transit, and quality of life rather than parking and streets for cars. The design supports ample mobility without car ownership or, for car owners, greatly reduced trips.
Most of life's necessities and many amenities will be within a short 5 minute walk or a few minutes ride on the Village Bus. Residential areas are served by quiet, safe walkways that lead to a Village Square. The Village Square has a busway, grocery store, restaurant overlooking the bay, cafe opening onto a small park, office, community meeting room, fitness center, and more. The Village Bus is frequent, fast and free to Village residents; it will reach the Cal State campus in two minutes, and downtown Hayward and BART in six minutes.
Residents would have access to cars through a limited number of spaces rented separately from residences and through car share, car rental, and off-site parking. See the "Mobility" page for details.
Savings in land costs, construction costs, reduced car use, and utility bills make living in Quarry Village more affordable than suburban alternatives. "The Benefits" page discusses the many advantages of life at Quarry Village.
